The Mabungo Cultural Group, established in 2008, is based in Kisoro District, southwestern Uganda, about 10 kilometers from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Originally formed by a small group of people with a passion for sharing Uganda’s rich cultural heritage through entertainment, the group has since grown to 34 members. Today, the Mabungo Cultural Group is renowned for offering the Mabungo Cultural Experience, an immersive journey into the traditions and customs of Uganda. Their performances include traditional music, dance, and storytelling, showcasing the beauty and diversity of local culture.
The group engages in a wide range of cultural activities, attracting visitors from around the world. These performances not only serve as entertainment but also as a means of educating people about the unique cultural practices of the region. Through their efforts, the members of the Mabungo Cultural Group generate income that supports their families, covering essential needs such as shelter, food, education, and healthcare. The group’s dedication to preserving and promoting their cultural heritage while improving their livelihoods has made them a significant cultural force in the region, contributing both to community development and the tourism sector in Uganda.
Unlike typical sightseeing experiences, the Mabungo Village Cultural Experience is designed to be interactive and participatory. Visitors are invited to engage directly with the local community, joining in on their daily routines and activities. From preparing traditional meals to participating in folklore celebrations, this tour offers a hands-on experience of traditional Bafumbira life. Local villagers share their customs and traditions, ensuring that visitors gain an authentic understanding of their way of life.
The tour provides insights into various aspects of village life, including how the community grows its crops and educates its children. Visitors can also learn traditional crafts like basket weaving and witness captivating cultural performances. The highlight of the tour is often the preparation and cooking of local food in the authentic African way. The experience of cooking over open fires, with the smoke and aromas filling the air, adds a fascinating layer to the cultural immersion.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Mabungo Village Cultural Tour is knowing that the proceeds from the tour go directly to the local community. By participating in this experience, visitors not only gain valuable cultural insights but also contribute to the well-being of the village. The tour helps sustain the community’s traditional way of life while providing economic support for education, healthcare, and other local needs.
Mabungo Village is nestled among the green rolling hills of Kisoro District, about a 30-minute drive from Kisoro town. It is conveniently located near popular tourist attractions, including Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (1 hour away) and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (2 hours away), home to the world’s remaining endangered mountain gorillas. The village’s proximity to these parks makes it easy for tourists to add the Mabungo Cultural Tour as a perfect conclusion to their gorilla trekking adventures.
The duration of the Mabungo Cultural Experience varies depending on the visitor’s preferences, but the tour typically lasts between 2 to 3 hours, providing a meaningful and memorable addition to any visit to southwestern Uganda.
Through their fantastic local dances, they earn money, where every visitor pays USD 30 and this money goes to the group savings, where they collectively use it to do a lot, including school fees to their children, buying animals, land and many others.
They also make other items like the sleeping mats, baskets, and many others which they sell at affordable prices and make money which they add on their savings account, and all this is used to support their lives.
