Day 1: Journey from Kampala to Kisoro – Nkuringo
The adventure begins with an early morning departure from Kampala as you embark on an exciting 8 to 9-hour drive to the scenic town of Kisoro, situated in southwestern Uganda. After a hearty breakfast, our experienced driver-guide will pick you up from your residence, providing a tour briefing before starting the journey. The road trip will take you through lush landscapes and several interesting stops along the way.
Stop at the Equator – Kayabwe
The first notable stop will be at the Equator in Kayabwe. Here, you can take pictures at the iconic line where the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet, and explore some unique experiments that demonstrate how water behaves differently on either side of the Equator. This stop provides a fun and informative break as well as an opportunity to stretch your legs.
Lunch in Mbarara and Scenic Views
Continuing the journey, you’ll pass through small villages, green valleys, and rolling hills before arriving in Mbarara, the largest town in western Uganda. We will take a break here for lunch, sampling some local Ugandan dishes or choosing from an array of international cuisine available in the area. After lunch, we resume our drive through Kabale, admiring the breathtaking highlands of southwestern Uganda. Highlights along this stretch include views of the Echuya Forest, known for its thick bamboo groves, and the famous Lake Bunyonyi, adorned with numerous islands.
Arrival at Nkuringo and Overnight Stay
As we approach Kisoro, the stunning sight of Lake Mutanda comes into view, a preview of the lakeside charm that awaits in the area. Upon reaching Nkuringo, you’ll check into your lodge, have a delicious dinner, and unwind in preparation for the exciting activities of the following day. Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Transfer to Lake Mutanda

After breakfast, our driver-guide will assist you in getting registered for the trek by presenting your passport at the registration center. Once registered, we proceed to the starting point for a safety briefing and a short orientation on what to expect. You’ll be assigned a local guide and provided with a walking stick to support you along the forest trails.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
The trek into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest will take you through dense foliage, winding trails, and a rich ecosystem teeming with life. As you journey deeper into the forest, keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, colorful birds, and small mammals that call Bwindi home. While the exact duration of the trek depends on how far the gorilla family you are tracking has moved, it typically lasts from a few hours to most of the day. Upon finally locating a family of mountain gorillas, you’ll have an extraordinary, close-up experience with these majestic creatures, observing their behavior and interactions within their natural habitat.
Transfer to Lake Mutanda for an Overnight Stay
After completing the trek and returning from the forest, we set off for the tranquil shores of Lake Mutanda. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your chosen accommodation, such as the midrange Chameleon Hill Lodge or the budget-friendly Lake Mutanda Resort. Enjoy a relaxing dinner with views of the lake, reflecting on the incredible gorilla trekking experience before resting for the night.
Day 3: Canoeing on Lake Mutanda and Return to Kampala
On the final day, we start with an early breakfast, after which you check out and prepare for a canoeing experience on Lake Mutanda. This serene activity allows you to glide across the calm waters, surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Virunga foothills. The misty backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes, with their peaks often shrouded in fog, adds to the surreal beauty of the setting.
Canoeing and Exploring Python Island
The canoe ride includes a stop at Python Island, where, if luck permits, you may spot some pythons basking in the sun.
