You will pass through small towns, tea plantations, and forest reserves, with opportunities to stop for photo moments and a lunch break along the way. Arrive at your lodge near the park in the late afternoon or early evening, check-in, and relax after the long drive. Enjoy dinner and prepare for the exciting trekking day ahead. Overnight at a comfortable lodge.
Begin the day with an early breakfast before heading to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters for a briefing from the park rangers. After receiving important instructions and guidelines, you’ll set off for a thrilling gorilla trekking adventure through the dense bamboo forests and rugged terrain. Accompanied by experienced guides, you’ll hike for several hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once you find the gorillas, you will spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat—an awe-inspiring experience as you watch them interact, feed, and play. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation.
In the late afternoon, embark on a serene boat cruise on Lake Mutanda. The boat ride offers stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes, misty landscapes, and beautiful islands. As you glide along the lake’s calm waters, keep an eye out for a variety of bird species, including kingfishers, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. The boat cruise also gives you a glimpse into the lives of local communities living along the shores. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, head back to the park for another thrilling wildlife adventure—golden monkey tracking. These rare and playful primates, unique to the Virunga ranges, are known for their striking golden coats. You’ll follow the monkeys through the forest, watching them leap from tree to tree, feeding, and interacting with their surroundings. The experience provides incredible photo opportunities and a closer look at one of Africa’s most endangered species. After spending time with the golden monkeys, return to your lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, immerse yourself in a cultural experience with the local Batwa community. The Batwa were the original forest dwellers of the region, and you’ll learn about their ancient traditions, survival techniques, and their close relationship with the forest.
